 ABOUT THE BREED:
As more and more people live in the city, needs have changed. Most are not looking for dogs who can hunt, we are looking for companions. We look for dogs who are playful, friendly towards people and pets, easy to train and easy to maintain.

ABOUT DOODLES

Questions and Answers

Q:  What's a Goldendoodle?

A:  Goldendoodles are a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle. They are beautiful, friendly dogs that are also lighter shedding than a golden retriever. Multigenerational Goldendoodles tend to be low shed or no shed.

Q:  What's a Labradoodle?

A:  A labradoodle is a Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross mix.  We breed multigenerational Labradoodles directly from Australian breeding stock as well as first-cross-backcross litters (F1B). (An F1B is a first cross labradoodle that has been bred back to a poodle to help improve the non-shedding, allergy friendly coat.)

All of our breeding stock undergoes genetic testing for soundness of hips and eyes

Q: What is meant by *multigen*, F1B, F2, or F1?

A:  Labradoodles are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Puppies coming from this breeding are called “F1” or first generation doodles. Sometimes a F1 doodle will be breed to another Poodle in order to get a more dependable and allergy-friendly coat. Puppies resulting from this breeding may be referred to as “F1B” (B means backcross) or F2. Continuing to breed Labradoodles to Labradoodles or Poodles will eventually produce puppies referred to as “multigen”.

Q:  Are all Doodles non-shedding?

A:  No.  F1 Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are considered to be low shed.  They will shed a little bit.  F1b and F2 Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are likely to shed less than the F1's.  Multigenerational Labradoodles and Goldendoodles usually do not shed.

Q: What about the doodle”s coat type and the likelihood of shedding?

A:  There are several types of coats:
  • Hair coat – Most often you will see a hair coat in an earlier generation Labradoodle. These coats do shed.
  • Fleece coat – Fleece coats sometimes shed. A fleece coat is wavier than a hair coat, but not as curly as a wool coat.
  • Wool, or curly coat – A wool coat does not shed. It does require the most attention of all the coats.

Q: Are Doodles Hypo-allergenic?

A:  Doodles, because of their Poodle ancestry, are "allergy friendly" but we can not guarantee they will be hypo-allergenic.  F2's and Multi Generational Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are recommended for those who have allergies and/or asthma.  In most cases people who have allergies or asthma have been able to adapt well with the F2 doodles and higher generations of doodles.

Q:  Why should I/we consider a Windy Hills Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle?

A:  Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are smart, loving, family-oriented dogs.  They have light to non-shedding, allergy-friendly coats, and they do not have the dog smell associated with other breeds.  They are highly trainable, friendly companions.  Windy Hills breeds genetically tested and physically sound doodles with great personalities.  This assures you of getting a puppy you can love and enjoy throughout his/her lifetime.  We stand behind all of our puppies.  If your puppy develops a life threatening genetic illness during the first 24 months of life, we will refund your purchase price minus our costs.

Q:  Why are your puppies neutered or spayed at 8-10 weeks?

A:  Unless your puppy is purchased for breeding purposes, he or she will be neutered or spayed before coming to live with you. At one time it was thought that dogs should not be spayed or neutered until they were 4-6 months old. For a variety of reasons, dog population control being at the top of the list, early spaying and neutering has become common procedure in veterinary medicine.

Q:  Can I/we pick out our puppy?

A:  We use something called an “allocation process” rather than a firm "first come first serve" method.  When the puppies are 5 weeks old we spot the potential breeding puppies that we will keep for our breeding line.  After the puppies are 6 weeks old we then invite the people from that litters' wait list to come and be introduced to the litter.  We are want each family to meet the puppies and we do our best to meet each family's requests regarding gender, color, coat type while trying to make the best match with regard to puppy personality and family needs.

Q:  Can we come meet you and see the puppies?

A:  We do not allow visitors to our home with the exception of confirmed puppy buyers who are invited to visit the puppies at 6 weeks of age.  There are several reasons for this.  The incidence of a very contagious life-threatening puppy virus called “parvo” is the main reason we do not allow routine visitors.

Q:  Do you ship?

A:  Yes, we ship within the continental United States and Canada. (For shipping to South America or Europe please contact us).

Q: What if I have more questions?

A:  If you just have some question that needs to be answered or need more information before beginning the adoption process, go to the Contact Us page.
